Wheel nuts, also known as tire nuts, are mainly used to fix the wheel hub shell of automobile tires. They usually have an equilateral hexagonal shape and a taper at one end of the nut, and some also have a flange at the tapered part. The design features of wheel nuts include a tapered part for placing nylon washers to enhance the locking effect.
Materials and specifications
The materials of wheel nuts usually include A3 low carbon steel, 35K high-speed steel wire, 45# steel, 40CR and 35Crmoa, etc. Their hardness grades range from grade 4 to grade 12, and the surface treatment is mostly zinc plating or white zinc plating, using cold electrogalvanizing process. Common thread specifications include M8, M10, M12, M14, M16, M18, M20, M22, M24, M30, etc., and the pitch is generally 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm.
Installation and maintenance
When installing wheel nuts, a torque wrench is required to ensure the correct preload. If you use common tools (such as a cross wrench or the wrench that comes with the car), you must also ensure that the tightening force is appropriate. During maintenance, regularly check the tightness of the wheel nuts to prevent danger caused by looseness when driving at high speeds.
